How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 30% of 50 = 0.3 × 50 = 15
- Take it off the price: 50 − 15 = 35
- Check: Add the saving back: 35 + 15 = 50.
Another method. In one step: you pay 70% of the price, so 0.7 × 50 = 35. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =50*(1-30%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 30% off, you pay 70% of the price: 35 instead of 50, a saving of 15.
Shopping: an item marked $50 with 30% off costs $35 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
30% off followed by another 30% off is 51% off in total, not 60%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 30% of 50. Two discounts do not add up: 30% off and then another 30% off leaves 24.5, not 20, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
