How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 70% of 100 = 0.7 × 100 = 70
  2. Take it off the price: 100 − 70 = 30
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 30 + 70 = 100.

Another method. In one step: you pay 30% of the price, so 0.3 × 100 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100*(1-70%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 70% off, you pay 30% of the price: 30 instead of 100, a saving of 70.

Shopping: an item marked $100 with 70% off costs $30 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

70% off followed by another 70% off is 91% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 70% of 100. Two discounts do not add up: 70% off and then another 70% off leaves 9, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
