How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 60% of 15 = 0.6 × 15 = 9
- Take it off the price: 15 − 9 = 6
- Check: Add the saving back: 6 + 9 = 15.
Another method. In one step: you pay 40% of the price, so 0.4 × 15 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15*(1-60%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 60% off, you pay 40% of the price: 6 instead of 15, a saving of 9.
Shopping: an item marked $15 with 60% off costs $6 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
60% off followed by another 60% off is 84% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 60% of 15. Two discounts do not add up: 60% off and then another 60% off leaves 2.4, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
