How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 40% of 20 = 0.4 × 20 = 8
  2. Take it off the price: 20 − 8 = 12
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 12 + 8 = 20.

Another method. In one step: you pay 60% of the price, so 0.6 × 20 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20*(1-40%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 40% off, you pay 60% of the price: 12 instead of 20, a saving of 8.

Shopping: an item marked $20 with 40% off costs $12 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

40% off followed by another 40% off is 64% off in total, not 80%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 40% of 20. Two discounts do not add up: 40% off and then another 40% off leaves 7.2, not 4, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
