How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 13 = 0.13
- Check: Work backwards: 0.13 ÷ 13 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/13, so part = 1 × 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.13 is the 1% share of 13. The remaining 99% is 12.87, and the two parts add back up to 13.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $13 saves $0.13, so you pay $12.87.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 13 by 1% gives 13.13 and decreasing it by 1% gives 12.87. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 12.9987, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 13% of 1. 1% of 13 and 13% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
