How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
- Multiply: 0.13 × 1 = 0.13
- Check: Work backwards: 0.13 ÷ 1 × 100 = 13%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/1, so part = 13 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.13. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.13 is the 13% share of 1. The remaining 87% is 0.87, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 13% off an item priced $1 saves $0.13, so you pay $0.87.
Adding and taking away 13%
Increasing 1 by 13% gives 1.13 and decreasing it by 13% gives 0.87. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 0.9831, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 13. 13% of 1 and 1% of 13 are always equal (both are 13 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.13), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
