How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 17 = 0.17
- Check: Work backwards: 0.17 ÷ 17 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/17, so part = 1 × 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.17 is the 1% share of 17. The remaining 99% is 16.83, and the two parts add back up to 17.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $17 saves $0.17, so you pay $16.83.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 17 by 1% gives 17.17 and decreasing it by 1% gives 16.83. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 16.9983, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 17% of 1. 1% of 17 and 17% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
