How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 24 = 0.24
- Check: Work backwards: 0.24 ÷ 24 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/24, so part = 1 × 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.24 is the 1% share of 24. The remaining 99% is 23.76, and the two parts add back up to 24.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $24 saves $0.24, so you pay $23.76.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 24 by 1% gives 24.24 and decreasing it by 1% gives 23.76. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 23.9976, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 24% of 1. 1% of 24 and 24% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
