How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
- Multiply: 0.24 × 1 = 0.24
- Check: Work backwards: 0.24 ÷ 1 × 100 = 24%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 24/100 = part/1, so part = 24 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.24. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =24%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.24 is the 24% share of 1. The remaining 76% is 0.76, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 24% off an item priced $1 saves $0.24, so you pay $0.76.
Adding and taking away 24%
Increasing 1 by 24% gives 1.24 and decreasing it by 24% gives 0.76. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 24% and then lowering the result by 24% ends at 0.9424, because the second 24% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 24. 24% of 1 and 1% of 24 are always equal (both are 24 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.24), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
