How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 38 = 0.38
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.38 ÷ 38 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/38, so part = 1 × 38 ÷ 100 = 0.38. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*38. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.38 is the 1% share of 38. The remaining 99% is 37.62, and the two parts add back up to 38.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $38 saves $0.38, so you pay $37.62.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 38 by 1% gives 38.38 and decreasing it by 1% gives 37.62. These do not cancel out: raising 38 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 37.9962, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
