How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 5 = 0.05
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.05 ÷ 5 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/5, so part = 1 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.05 is the 1% share of 5. The remaining 99% is 4.95, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $5 saves $0.05, so you pay $4.95.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 5 by 1% gives 5.05 and decreasing it by 1% gives 4.95. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 4.9995, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
