How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 64 = 0.64
- Check: Work backwards: 0.64 ÷ 64 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/64, so part = 1 × 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.64 is the 1% share of 64. The remaining 99% is 63.36, and the two parts add back up to 64.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $64 saves $0.64, so you pay $63.36.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 64 by 1% gives 64.64 and decreasing it by 1% gives 63.36. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 63.9936, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 64% of 1. 1% of 64 and 64% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
