How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 95 = 0.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.95 ÷ 95 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/95, so part = 1 × 95 ÷ 100 = 0.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*95. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.95 is the 1% share of 95. The remaining 99% is 94.05, and the two parts add back up to 95.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $95 saves $0.95, so you pay $94.05.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 95 by 1% gives 95.95 and decreasing it by 1% gives 94.05. These do not cancel out: raising 95 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 94.9905, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
