How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 95 ÷ 100 = 0.95
- Multiply: 0.95 × 1 = 0.95
- Check: Work backwards: 0.95 ÷ 1 × 100 = 95%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 95/100 = part/1, so part = 95 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.95. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =95%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.95 is the 95% share of 1. The remaining 5% is 0.05, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 95% off an item priced $1 saves $0.95, so you pay $0.05.
Adding and taking away 95%
Increasing 1 by 95% gives 1.95 and decreasing it by 95% gives 0.05. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 95% and then lowering the result by 95% ends at 0.0975, because the second 95% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 95. 95% of 1 and 1% of 95 are always equal (both are 95 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.95), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
