How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 96 = 0.96
- Check: Work backwards: 0.96 ÷ 96 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/96, so part = 1 × 96 ÷ 100 = 0.96. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*96. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.96 is the 1% share of 96. The remaining 99% is 95.04, and the two parts add back up to 96.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $96 saves $0.96, so you pay $95.04.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 96 by 1% gives 96.96 and decreasing it by 1% gives 95.04. These do not cancel out: raising 96 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 95.9904, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 96% of 1. 1% of 96 and 96% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 96 ÷ 100 = 0.96), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
