How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 16 = 1.6
- Check: Work backwards: 1.6 ÷ 16 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/16, so part = 10 × 16 ÷ 100 = 1.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.6 is the 10% share of 16. The remaining 90% is 14.4, and the two parts add back up to 16.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $16 saves $1.6, so you pay $14.4.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 16 by 10% gives 17.6 and decreasing it by 10% gives 14.4. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 15.84, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
