How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 21 = 2.1
- Check: Work backwards: 2.1 ÷ 21 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/21, so part = 10 × 21 ÷ 100 = 2.1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*21. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.1 is the 10% share of 21. The remaining 90% is 18.9, and the two parts add back up to 21.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $21 saves $2.1, so you pay $18.9.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 21 by 10% gives 23.1 and decreasing it by 10% gives 18.9. These do not cancel out: raising 21 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 20.79, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 21% of 10. 10% of 21 and 21% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 21 ÷ 100 = 2.1), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
