How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 10 = 2.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.1 ÷ 10 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/10, so part = 21 × 10 ÷ 100 = 2.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.1 is the 21% share of 10. The remaining 79% is 7.9, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $10 saves $2.1, so you pay $7.9.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 10 by 21% gives 12.1 and decreasing it by 21% gives 7.9. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 9.559, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
