How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 32 = 3.2
- Check: Work backwards: 3.2 ÷ 32 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/32, so part = 10 × 32 ÷ 100 = 3.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.2 is the 10% share of 32. The remaining 90% is 28.8, and the two parts add back up to 32.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $32 saves $3.2, so you pay $28.8.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 32 by 10% gives 35.2 and decreasing it by 10% gives 28.8. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 31.68, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 32% of 10. 10% of 32 and 32% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 32 ÷ 100 = 3.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
