How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 350 = 35
- Check: Work backwards: 35 ÷ 350 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/350, so part = 10 × 350 ÷ 100 = 35. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*350. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
35 is the 10% share of 350. The remaining 90% is 315, and the two parts add back up to 350.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $350 saves $35, so you pay $315.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 350 by 10% gives 385 and decreasing it by 10% gives 315. These do not cancel out: raising 350 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 346.5, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 350% of 10. 10% of 350 and 350% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 350 ÷ 100 = 35), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
