How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 51 = 5.1
- Check: Work backwards: 5.1 ÷ 51 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/51, so part = 10 × 51 ÷ 100 = 5.1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.1 is the 10% share of 51. The remaining 90% is 45.9, and the two parts add back up to 51.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $51 saves $5.1, so you pay $45.9.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 51 by 10% gives 56.1 and decreasing it by 10% gives 45.9. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 50.49, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
