How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 10 = 5.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.1 ÷ 10 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/10, so part = 51 × 10 ÷ 100 = 5.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.1 is the 51% share of 10. The remaining 49% is 4.9, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $10 saves $5.1, so you pay $4.9.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 10 by 51% gives 15.1 and decreasing it by 51% gives 4.9. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 7.399, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
