How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 550 = 55
- Check: Work backwards: 55 ÷ 550 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/550, so part = 10 × 550 ÷ 100 = 55. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*550. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
55 is the 10% share of 550. The remaining 90% is 495, and the two parts add back up to 550.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $550 saves $55, so you pay $495.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 550 by 10% gives 605 and decreasing it by 10% gives 495. These do not cancel out: raising 550 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 544.5, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 550% of 10. 10% of 550 and 550% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 550 ÷ 100 = 55), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
