How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 59 = 5.9
- Check: Work backwards: 5.9 ÷ 59 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/59, so part = 10 × 59 ÷ 100 = 5.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*59. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.9 is the 10% share of 59. The remaining 90% is 53.1, and the two parts add back up to 59.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $59 saves $5.9, so you pay $53.1.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 59 by 10% gives 64.9 and decreasing it by 10% gives 53.1. These do not cancel out: raising 59 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 58.41, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 59% of 10. 10% of 59 and 59% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 59 ÷ 100 = 5.9), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
