How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 850 = 85
- Check: Work backwards: 85 ÷ 850 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/850, so part = 10 × 850 ÷ 100 = 85. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*850. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
85 is the 10% share of 850. The remaining 90% is 765, and the two parts add back up to 850.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $850 saves $85, so you pay $765.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 850 by 10% gives 935 and decreasing it by 10% gives 765. These do not cancel out: raising 850 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 841.5, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 850% of 10. 10% of 850 and 850% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 850 ÷ 100 = 85), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
