How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 88 = 8.8
- Check: Work backwards: 8.8 ÷ 88 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/88, so part = 10 × 88 ÷ 100 = 8.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*88. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.8 is the 10% share of 88. The remaining 90% is 79.2, and the two parts add back up to 88.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $88 saves $8.8, so you pay $79.2.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 88 by 10% gives 96.8 and decreasing it by 10% gives 79.2. These do not cancel out: raising 88 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 87.12, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 88% of 10. 10% of 88 and 88% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 88 ÷ 100 = 8.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
