How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 900 = 90
- Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 900 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/900, so part = 10 × 900 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*900. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
90 is the 10% share of 900. The remaining 90% is 810, and the two parts add back up to 900.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $900 saves $90, so you pay $810.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 900 by 10% gives 990 and decreasing it by 10% gives 810. These do not cancel out: raising 900 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 891, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 900% of 10. 10% of 900 and 900% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 900 ÷ 100 = 90), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
