How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 900 ÷ 100 = 9
- Multiply: 9 × 10 = 90
- Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 10 × 100 = 900%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 900/100 = part/10, so part = 900 × 10 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =900%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 900% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 10: it is 9 times 10.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 900% of its $10 cost means selling it for $90.
Adding and taking away 900%
Increasing 10 by 900% gives 100. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 900% and then lowering the result by 900% ends at -800, because the second 900% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 900. 900% of 10 and 10% of 900 are always equal (both are 900 × 10 ÷ 100 = 90), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
