How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5
- Multiply: 2.5 × 100 = 250
- Check: Work backwards: 250 ÷ 100 × 100 = 250%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 250/100 = part/100, so part = 250 × 100 ÷ 100 = 250. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =250%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 250% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 100: it is 2.5 times 100.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 250% of its $100 cost means selling it for $250.
Adding and taking away 250%
Increasing 100 by 250% gives 350. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 250% and then lowering the result by 250% ends at -525, because the second 250% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 250. 250% of 100 and 100% of 250 are always equal (both are 250 × 100 ÷ 100 = 250), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
