How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
- Multiply: 0.11 × 1 = 0.11
- Check: Work backwards: 0.11 ÷ 1 × 100 = 11%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/1, so part = 11 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.11. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =11%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.11 is the 11% share of 1. The remaining 89% is 0.89, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 11% off an item priced $1 saves $0.11, so you pay $0.89.
Adding and taking away 11%
Increasing 1 by 11% gives 1.11 and decreasing it by 11% gives 0.89. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 0.9879, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 11. 11% of 1 and 1% of 11 are always equal (both are 11 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.11), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
