How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
  2. Multiply: 0.11 × 50 = 5.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 11%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/50, so part = 11 × 50 ÷ 100 = 5.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =11%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.5 is the 11% share of 50. The remaining 89% is 44.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 11% off an item priced $50 saves $5.5, so you pay $44.5.

Adding and taking away 11%

Increasing 50 by 11% gives 55.5 and decreasing it by 11% gives 44.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 49.395, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
