How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
  2. Multiply: 0.11 × 55 = 6.05
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.05 ÷ 55 × 100 = 11%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/55, so part = 11 × 55 ÷ 100 = 6.05. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =11%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.05 is the 11% share of 55. The remaining 89% is 48.95, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 11% off an item priced $55 saves $6.05, so you pay $48.95.

Adding and taking away 11%

Increasing 55 by 11% gives 61.05 and decreasing it by 11% gives 48.95. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 54.3345, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
