How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
  2. Multiply: 0.11 × 65 = 7.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.15 ÷ 65 × 100 = 11%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/65, so part = 11 × 65 ÷ 100 = 7.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =11%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.15 is the 11% share of 65. The remaining 89% is 57.85, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 11% off an item priced $65 saves $7.15, so you pay $57.85.

Adding and taking away 11%

Increasing 65 by 11% gives 72.15 and decreasing it by 11% gives 57.85. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 64.2135, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
