How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 100 = 12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12 ÷ 100 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/100, so part = 12 × 100 ÷ 100 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12 is the 12% share of 100. The remaining 88% is 88, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $100 saves $12, so you pay $88.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 100 by 12% gives 112 and decreasing it by 12% gives 88. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 98.56, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
