How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 12 = 1.44
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.44 ÷ 12 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/12, so part = 12 × 12 ÷ 100 = 1.44. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.44 is the 12% share of 12. The remaining 88% is 10.56, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $12 saves $1.44, so you pay $10.56.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 12 by 12% gives 13.44 and decreasing it by 12% gives 10.56. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 11.8272, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
