How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
- Multiply: 0.12 × 20 = 2.4
- Check: Work backwards: 2.4 ÷ 20 × 100 = 12%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/20, so part = 12 × 20 ÷ 100 = 2.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =12%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.4 is the 12% share of 20. The remaining 88% is 17.6, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 12% off an item priced $20 saves $2.4, so you pay $17.6.
Adding and taking away 12%
Increasing 20 by 12% gives 22.4 and decreasing it by 12% gives 17.6. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 19.712, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 12. 12% of 20 and 20% of 12 are always equal (both are 12 × 20 ÷ 100 = 2.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
