How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 5 = 0.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.6 ÷ 5 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/5, so part = 12 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.6 is the 12% share of 5. The remaining 88% is 4.4, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $5 saves $0.6, so you pay $4.4.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 5 by 12% gives 5.6 and decreasing it by 12% gives 4.4. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 4.928, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
