How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 96 = 11.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.52 ÷ 96 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/96, so part = 12 × 96 ÷ 100 = 11.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*96. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.52 is the 12% share of 96. The remaining 88% is 84.48, and the two parts add back up to 96.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $96 saves $11.52, so you pay $84.48.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 96 by 12% gives 107.52 and decreasing it by 12% gives 84.48. These do not cancel out: raising 96 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 94.6176, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
