How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 10 = 1.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.3 ÷ 10 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/10, so part = 13 × 10 ÷ 100 = 1.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.3 is the 13% share of 10. The remaining 87% is 8.7, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $10 saves $1.3, so you pay $8.7.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 10 by 13% gives 11.3 and decreasing it by 13% gives 8.7. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 9.831, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
