How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 100 = 13
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13 ÷ 100 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/100, so part = 13 × 100 ÷ 100 = 13. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13 is the 13% share of 100. The remaining 87% is 87, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $100 saves $13, so you pay $87.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 100 by 13% gives 113 and decreasing it by 13% gives 87. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 98.31, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 13. 13% of 100 and 100% of 13 are always equal (both are 13 × 100 ÷ 100 = 13), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
