How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 55 = 7.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.15 ÷ 55 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/55, so part = 13 × 55 ÷ 100 = 7.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.15 is the 13% share of 55. The remaining 87% is 47.85, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $55 saves $7.15, so you pay $47.85.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 55 by 13% gives 62.15 and decreasing it by 13% gives 47.85. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 54.0705, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
