How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 14 ÷ 100 = 0.14
  2. Multiply: 0.14 × 15 = 2.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.1 ÷ 15 × 100 = 14%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 14/100 = part/15, so part = 14 × 15 ÷ 100 = 2.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =14%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.1 is the 14% share of 15. The remaining 86% is 12.9, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 14% off an item priced $15 saves $2.1, so you pay $12.9.

Adding and taking away 14%

Increasing 15 by 14% gives 17.1 and decreasing it by 14% gives 12.9. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 14% and then lowering the result by 14% ends at 14.706, because the second 14% is taken of a bigger number.
