How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 14 = 2.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.1 ÷ 14 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/14, so part = 15 × 14 ÷ 100 = 2.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.1 is the 15% share of 14. The remaining 85% is 11.9, and the two parts add back up to 14.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $14 saves $2.1, so you pay $11.9.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 14 by 15% gives 16.1 and decreasing it by 15% gives 11.9. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 13.685, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 14% of 15. 15% of 14 and 14% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 14 ÷ 100 = 2.1), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
