How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 14 ÷ 100 = 0.14
- Multiply: 0.14 × 45 = 6.3
- Check: Work backwards: 6.3 ÷ 45 × 100 = 14%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 14/100 = part/45, so part = 14 × 45 ÷ 100 = 6.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =14%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.3 is the 14% share of 45. The remaining 86% is 38.7, and the two parts add back up to 45.
Discounts: 14% off an item priced $45 saves $6.3, so you pay $38.7.
Adding and taking away 14%
Increasing 45 by 14% gives 51.3 and decreasing it by 14% gives 38.7. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 14% and then lowering the result by 14% ends at 44.118, because the second 14% is taken of a bigger number.
