How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1000 ÷ 100 = 10
- Multiply: 10 × 15 = 150
- Check: Work backwards: 150 ÷ 15 × 100 = 1000%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1000/100 = part/15, so part = 1000 × 15 ÷ 100 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1000%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 1000% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 15: it is 10 times 15.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 1000% of its $15 cost means selling it for $150.
Adding and taking away 1000%
Increasing 15 by 1000% gives 165. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 1000% and then lowering the result by 1000% ends at -1,485, because the second 1000% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 15% of 1000. 1000% of 15 and 15% of 1000 are always equal (both are 1000 × 15 ÷ 100 = 150), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
