How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 11 = 1.65
- Check: Work backwards: 1.65 ÷ 11 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/11, so part = 15 × 11 ÷ 100 = 1.65. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*11. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.65 is the 15% share of 11. The remaining 85% is 9.35, and the two parts add back up to 11.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $11 saves $1.65, so you pay $9.35.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 11 by 15% gives 12.65 and decreasing it by 15% gives 9.35. These do not cancel out: raising 11 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 10.7525, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
