How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 12 = 1.8
- Check: Work backwards: 1.8 ÷ 12 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/12, so part = 15 × 12 ÷ 100 = 1.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.8 is the 15% share of 12. The remaining 85% is 10.2, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $12 saves $1.8, so you pay $10.2.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 12 by 15% gives 13.8 and decreasing it by 15% gives 10.2. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 11.73, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
