How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 37 = 5.55
- Check: Work backwards: 5.55 ÷ 37 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/37, so part = 15 × 37 ÷ 100 = 5.55. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*37. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.55 is the 15% share of 37. The remaining 85% is 31.45, and the two parts add back up to 37.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $37 saves $5.55, so you pay $31.45.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 37 by 15% gives 42.55 and decreasing it by 15% gives 31.45. These do not cancel out: raising 37 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 36.1675, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
