How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 42 = 6.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.3 ÷ 42 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/42, so part = 15 × 42 ÷ 100 = 6.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*42. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.3 is the 15% share of 42. The remaining 85% is 35.7, and the two parts add back up to 42.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $42 saves $6.3, so you pay $35.7.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 42 by 15% gives 48.3 and decreasing it by 15% gives 35.7. These do not cancel out: raising 42 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 41.055, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
