How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
  2. Multiply: 0.42 × 15 = 6.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.3 ÷ 15 × 100 = 42%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/15, so part = 42 × 15 ÷ 100 = 6.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =42%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.3 is the 42% share of 15. The remaining 58% is 8.7, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 42% off an item priced $15 saves $6.3, so you pay $8.7.

Adding and taking away 42%

Increasing 15 by 42% gives 21.3 and decreasing it by 42% gives 8.7. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 42% and then lowering the result by 42% ends at 12.354, because the second 42% is taken of a bigger number.
